Radiologist Questions CT Scans

What are the side effects of a head CT scan?

I'm 45 years old and I'm going to have a head CT scan next week. Are there any side effects from this imaging test?

There are no side effects for a non-contrast CT scan of the head. However, if the CT scan is performed with injection of intravenous contrast, then there is a potential for contrast-related side effects. These would include allergies including severe allergies, as well as the possibility of kidney injury in patients that have impaired renal function or in patients that are diabetic.

There are no side effects. The radiation dose received from a head CT (< 1mSv) is way less than what we get from just being on Earth for one year (3 mSv).
Radiation to eyes, thyroid.
None.
