Arthritis type pain usually increases with activity such as prolonged walking or running and generally improves with rest. Depending on the type of arthritis, there may be swelling or redness or even increased heat in the foot. A definite diagnosis, however, requires x-rays and examination by a professional experienced in the management of foot arthritis such as a rheumatologist, orthopedic surgeon, or podiatrist.
Thinning of cartilage in the joints of the foot. Bone spurs around the joints. Inflammation which will in response cause pain, swelling and possibly some redness in the area.
As a general rule, the symptoms of arthritis are pain in a joint with activity, swelling, stiffness and warmth. It could be in any joint, the ankle, toes or even in the middle of the foot. Try rest, and Advil 3 tablets 3 times a day. Once you are better, wear cushioned shoes with a low heel.

Hope it helps!

By far, the most common complaint is pain. It depends where the arthritis is located. At the toes joints, they may become stiff. Arthritis in the back of the foot and ankle is mostly causing stiffness, pain, and can be difficult working over uneven ground or with curbs, stairs, etc. There are many types of arthritis, but the most common is wear and tear arthritis, or the arthritis of aging.
I hope this helps.
