You need a nerve conduction study in your hands and based on what they find, you can get treatment which can be entrapment neuropathy like carpal tunnel syndrome or it can be radicular (pinched nerve in neck) or neuropathy.
First the cause of neuropathy needs to be determined as neuropathy as a general term- some conditions that lead to neuropathy can be addressed through surgery and some can be managed through non operative treatment.
I know this can be very painful. There is medication that can help with nerve pain. I would also consult a hand surgeon as well.
That really depends upon what you mean by "neuropathy." If you are talking about carpal tunnel syndrome, which is the most common type of "compression neuropathy," then you can be treated with either splinting, cortisone injections or surgery, depending upon the severity of your symptoms and condition. If you are talking about a neuropathy secondary to diabetes or other medical conditions, then surgery is not indicated and you should see a neurologist for medical management and possibly medications. My recommendation is that you consult either a hand surgeon or a neurologist.
That depends on the cause of the neuropathy. If the neuropathy is from diabetes, treatments are slim. Tight control of your glucose level is the best long-term treatment. However, if the neuropathy is from a pinched nerve such as carpal tunnel syndrome, the best treatment maybe surgery. In summary, it depends on the cause of the neuropathy.
