What causes pigmentation of the retina?

I'm 42 and I've noticed that there's a darkening spot on my retina. I've watched it over the last few months pretty carefully, and it's definitely changing. What causes pigmentation of the retina? Should I see a doctor?

It is impossible to see your own retina. You may be seeing a change to your iris(the colored part of your eye) or the sclera (the white part of your eye). You need to see an ophthalmologist ASAP to rule out melanoma.
If you can see it, it's not the retina. It's your sclera or white of your eye. It's either a melanosis or a melanoma. The latter is a cancer. You should see your eye doctor soon
