What could be the cause of high leukocytes?

A blood test showed that my teenage son has high leukocytes. What could be the cause of high leukocytes?

There are several types of leukocytes and the cause depends on which is elevated. The most common cause is an infection. My guess is that the leukocyte count is not too high and that is why the primary physician has not referred him to a hematologist.
Leukocytes are White blood cells and if they are high we check for infection. If they are very high and he is anemic you worry about leukemia. but this is rare. He would need it repeated to see if it is going up or down with treatment
