It’s a psychiatric disease that usually starts with late adolescence and early adulthood. It runs in families and unfortunately from mother’s Side. It’s now accepted as gene that cause the illness. It can be mild to severe with psychotic features. Nowadays in USA It’s called Bipolar one and the milder one Bipolar two.
Usually it starts with Mania or Depression and change to depression to mania or otherwise.
U may have more depression than mania or otherwise. Some have pure cyclic depression or pure cyclic mania. It gets complicated when it becomes rapid cycling either in depression or mania or mixed. Sometimes it’s difficult to distinguish from schizophrenia specially in the severe forms were hallucinations and delusions r common.
In Europe they name manic- depression , depressions of different severity as Bipolar 1 ,2,3 etc until 7.
Treatment is challenging when rapid cycling occurs , or over treatment of mania into depression and vice versa.
