There are a couple reasons when your gum is swollen around a tooth. One could be because something is stuck between your teeth, another reason could be gum disease or tooth infection.
Usually it means you have some kind of inflammation, possibly an infection
You could have a gum infection due to plaque and bacteria accumulating under the gums. You should see a periodontist as soon as possible for an evaluation.
