Pediatrician Questions Swallowing Problems

What happens when child swallows a coin?

My daughter is 7 year old, and she accidentally swallowed a coin. Her airway is not blocked and she seems fine, but I'm just worried that it'll cause some sort of emergency. What should I do?

"This too shall pass."
If the coin isn't blocking her airway it should pass in a couple days while having a normal bowel movement. To know if it has passed you will need to check every stool for the coin. If she doesn't have a stool in the next couple days it could be stuck. Take her to the doctor
Most coins pass through the GI tract and will be in the stool in 3-7 days. If there is respiratory distress or failure to pass the coin an xray may be obtained, esp if vomiting or severe abdominal pain or distention.
