Good home care. Initially you will be sensitive because your clean tooth is exposed to new changes. You can use sensitive teeth toothpaste like sensodyne to help you for first couple of days.
I recommend brushing and flossing more often and thoroughly after a cleaning and use warm water. The first helps if the "gums" hurt following a cleaning and warm water helps if the teeth are sensitive.
Either a warm salt water rinse (1 tablespoon of salt per 1 cup warm water) or a fluoride varnish treatment.
Maybe warm salt water rinses every 4-6 hours
Preventing pain after a prophy begins with preventing gym disease. Regular and effective flossing to remove the bacteria that gets under the gums is your best weapon. These bacteria will cause bleeding with brushing or flossing land also when you are being checked for fuk disease at the dentist. Afterwards you can do salt water soaks for inflammation that may arise if your have gingivitis.
If you can take medications like Ibuprofen or Aleve, they can reduce inflammation that is causing the discomfort. Warm salt water rinses may also help a bit.
