A brachial plexus or interscalene nerve block is an injection of local anesthetic next to the nerves that supply sensation to the shoulder and arm. The injection is typically given preoperatively to a sedated patient, and lasts anywhere from about 12-30 hours (depending on the medications administered). Sometimes an infusion catheter is placed allowing an infusion of local anesthetic to continue for 2-4 days after surgery.

It is used for post-op pain control. It is usually done either before surgery in the holding area or in the Recovery Room, when you wake up after surgery. It involves injecting some local anesthetics (numbing medication) on the side of your neck. It will give you anywhere between 12-18 hours of pain relief.
Hope this answers your question.
AKA inter-scalene nerve block. Under sedation and with ultrasound guidance, the nerves can be visualized on the side of the neck.

A regional block for shoulder surgery is administred using some techniques. In my country most popular is infraclavicular guide by sono.
