Removal of parts of the thyroid, normally subtotal thyroidectomy.
Removal of your thyroid gland.
Removing your enlarged thyroid gland with an operation done by an expert surgeon who can do it without harming your parathyroid glands.
Depends on the removal of the thyroid gland. For hyperthyroidism, as you have been diagnosed, the recommendation would be a total thyroidectomy, which would mean removal of the entire plant and the need for you to be on medication for your thyroid removal for the rest of your life!
What is a thyroidectomy? This is the removal of the thyroid gland.
Thyroidectomy is partial or complete surgical removal of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland sits at the base of your neck upfront. The thyroid gland regulates whole body metabolism. Hyperthyroidism refers to the condition when the thyroid gland is overactive. An overactive thyroid gland is initially controlled with medications, but many patients do not respond or lose the response to medications so it becomes necessary to remove the thyroid gland. A thyroidectomy (surgical removal) is one way; another way is to consume radioactive iodine (a chemical that is only absorbed the thyroid) to selectively destroy the thyroid gland. Regardless of how the thyroid gland is inactivated, patients will need to be on life-long thyroid hormone supplementation.
A thyroidectomy is the surgical removal of the thyroid gland in the neck. There are 3 ways to treat this disease: 1) medication that blocks the thyroid glands output. This requires 2 or 3 pills a day for 1-2 years. 2) Thyroidectomy that you have been recommended 3) treatment with radioactive Iodine to destroy the gland. The latter is the easiest & less traumatic and is what I usually recommend if the thyroid gland is not too large for this treatment, then I would recommend the thyroidectomy.
A thyroidectomy is removal of the thyroid gland. In your case, your thyroid gland is too active, and this can have significant health risks. After removal of the thyroid gland, you will be required to take thyroid hormone replacement, which is just a pill, for the rest of your life, as your body will no longer be able to procedure thyroid hormone naturally.
