Dentist Questions Tooth infection

What is the best antibiotic for tooth infection?

My dentist prescribed me penicillin for my tooth infection but I'm still feeling the same symptoms... it's not really working. Are there other antibiotics that I can be given?

Antibiotics are given for the gram specific type of bacteria.
If penicillin isn’t working, I often prescribe Clindamycin 300mg, three times a day for 10 days. This is a broad spectrum antibiotic and is very effective.
If antibiotic is not working, then it might need to be changed to another one or there might be another problem. It is always best to communicate situation to your dentist and you might need to be seen in the office for further evaluation.
There is not one best antibiotic for every case involving teeth. It depends on the infection we are treating. Type or suspected of bacteria involved, location of infection, tissue involved, duration, severity, risk of further spread, patient sensitivity or allergies to medications are all factors involved in determining the antibiotic to use. If after a reasonable amount of time on a specific antibiotic with no apparent decrease or resolution of signs or symptoms of infection is noted, then a re-evaluation of the case and drug used is warranted. A new plan could involve a different medication or debridement of the area.
You should discuss this with your doctor. Taking an antibiotic in the penicillin family requires that you wait 1 hour before eating or two hours after eating. The stomach acids lessen the effectiveness of the antibiotic. There is one antibiotic that is suppose to be unaffected with stomach acids. Penicillin VK doesn't seem to be strong enough. My personal requirement for
an antibiotic is it has to be strong -- broad spectrum. This means it can destroy a wider range of bacteria. You can eat with the antibiotic. I want an antibiotic that will launch an "all out" attack quickly. Emergency rooms give a form of penicillin with a strong pain medication. Taking a capsule of an antibiotic twice a day is not enough. The infection is still expanding and the pain medication won't work. There are other antibiotics that can be used. Talking with your doctor about your concern is a must. There are other antibiotics that can be used.
