A nervous breakdown is a very general term denoting a significant loss of function. This can occur with anxiety, depression and ever situational struggles. A psychotic break denotes the presence of hallucinations, delusions, or a combination where there is a lack of reality testing.
Nervous breakdown is a broader term mostly used by lay public that may or may not include psychosis. It could be extreme of anxiety with severe panic attack or dissociative episode. However, psychosis is the break away from reality with perceptual abnormalities like hallucinations and thoughts abnormality like delusional thoughts.
