Constipation is usually defined by reduced bowel movements, less than 1 every 3 days. This can cause abdominal discomfort, distress, excessive straining leading to hernias, difficult defecation, diverticulosis, hemorrhoids. In severe constipation, sometimes surgery is required.
Constipation is more commonly a symptom of an underlying problem rather than a cause. If you have abnormal bowel habits or a change in your bowel habits, you should see your doctor. That being said, I have seen constipation lead to hemorrhoids, rectal fissures, and even colonic perforation and sepsis. Exercise, drinking plenty of water, and a high fiber diet is good to maintain regularity. But again, changes in bowel habits can be a sign of an underlying problem and should be checked by your doctor.
