Hepatologist-Pathologist Questions Hepatitis

What tests are used to confirm hepatitis?

I came into the doctor with jaundice, and the possibility of having hepatitis came up. He does want me to have blood tests to get an official diagnosis, but I'm just wondering, would I need multiple blood tests for a diagnosis, and are there any other tests for hepatitis?

Blood test can detect signs of hepatitis B virus in your body and tell your provider whether is acute or chronic. Detection of Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), or core antigen (HBcAg) in liver tissue by immunohistochemical staining and of HBV DNA by Southern Hybridization, in situ. HBV was originally called serum hepatitis. Hepatitis B virus plays an important role in hepatocellular carcinoma. HBsAg is a marker that appears before symptoms and is a marker of active infection. IgM anti-HBc is usually the first antibody to appear. HBeAg, HBV DNA appear soon after HBsAg and it may indicate persistence or progression. Consult your healthcare provider.
The tests are Hepatitis C (HCV) antibody test, RNA, or viral load test, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. Most people believe that because they had a blood test, they are going to be tested automatically for hepatitis B, and C. No, you are not tested for hepatitis as part of a routine blood test. It must be ordered by you physician. High viral load, which is usually greater than 800,000 IU/L (international units per liter or low viral load which is less than 800,000 IU/L. Your liver enzymes, (normal liver Enzymes are Aspartate Transferase (AST), 10 to 40 units per liters (u/L), and Alanine Transferase (ALT), 7 to 56 units per liters (u/L). The normal range to Gamma Glutamyl Transferase GGT is 9 to 48 U/L Then, Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), 30 to 120 IU/L, will be elevated.
Hepatitis C is treated with direct-acting antiviral (DAA) medications. Your doctor will determine the hepatitis C genotype for a specific medication. About 75% of American are genotype 1a or 1b according to the American Liver Foundation. Thank you.
Unfortunately there is no one test that can determine hepatitis. First, one must determine that something is going on with the liver. These are liver function tests. Then there are tests for different classifications of hepatitis. There are also tests that identify the different components of certain types of hepatitis, mainly B. These particular tests will determine what stage you are in if you have hepatitis, such as being actively contagious and determining what medication you need to combat your illness, assuming you have it. All of these tests just require a few tubes of blood. It is possible you may have to have some of these tests repeated to check the progress of the disease. Good luck.

3 main Hepatitis virus are now easily detectable by blood tests. Hepatitis A, B and C. Hepatitis per se is the inflammation of your Liver but to know if the cause is due to the virus, we have to do blood test.
It depends on the underlying cause of hepatitis. Blood is required to test for the different causes of hepatitis. Mainly to rule out viral infection. The common causes are due to viral infections but there are other non virus related causes too.
There are many ways to check for hepatitis. Usually serological test looking for antibodies are ordered first. Some physicians may order PCR based DNA tests depending on the results of serological tests.
A hepatitis panel includes three types of viruses that cause hepatitis: Hepatitis A B C and liver function tests Alanine aminotransferase (ALT/SGPT); albumin, serum; alkaline phosphatase, serum; aspartate aminotransferase (AST/SGOT); bilirubin, direct; bilirubin, total; protein, total, serum, Yes you should have the panel done.
