“When can my daughter play sports again?”
My daughter dislocated her shoulder while playing field hockey. Thankfully, she didn't need surgery and the doctor was able to put it back in place. She's going to be in a cast for about 3-4 weeks. How soon should she start playing sports again?

Yes but make sure physical therapy is properly completed. Also, consider PRP or bone marrow injection to stabilize the shoulder. Under 18 is a 95% chance of redislocation.
She needs rehab post-immobilization, usually about 3 months. Recurrent shoulder instability is common in this age group.
Cast is not indicated for shoulder dislocation. She would be in some sort of sling for a few weeks and then lots of physical therapy. She is looking at 6-8weeks before returning to contact sports. But keep in mind, she now has an increased risk of recurrent shoulder dislocation without surgical stabilization.
Make sure she works with physical therapy to strengthen the small ligaments supporting the shoulder. Have the therapist recommend when return to play is ready.
So sorry your daughter had this injury. Many times after a first dislocation the recovery includes rest then aggressive physical therapy. You doctor will guide the duration of this treatment but most players can get back to play after they demonstrate strength and stability of the shoulder so they don't have another dislocation.
