Adolescent Psychiatrist | Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Questions Sex

When is it the right time to talk to my daughter about sex?

Where we are, my daughter's school does not have the proper sex education classes, which is really upsetting. There have been multiple pregnancies in the high school at her district, and I just want to make sure daughter practices safe sex and is careful, if she does has any intercourse (personally I want to preach abstinence, but I know how tough that is in this day and age). She's fourteen years old now. Should I sit her down and talk about the birds and bees?

Yes you should have already had the talk by 11 or 12. She has probably been given information by her friends but this may not be factual. IF you need help her doctor probably can assist you.
Yes, for sure!! By age 14, your daughter may already know a lot more about the birds and bees than you imagine. Girls ages 9 - 11 need to start understanding the basic concepts associated with conception, birth, and safety.
Talk to your daughter ASAP.
All the best,

Sure, that’s a good age. 16 can be too late sometimes. There are ways to get her to agree on that also. Just use your imagination and go for it
Absolutely. Also, search out in your area for church or social groups that have a sex education class/workshop/meeting group and both you as parents and your daughter get involved.
