OB-GYN (Obstetrician-Gynecologist) Questions OB-GYN

When will I get my period?

I am thirteen and four months from being fourteen. I have not had my period yet and have had no discharge. However, I seem to be developing at a normal rate for my age but I am worried that my period will never start because discharge is a sure sign that you will get it.

Too early to worry. Have an exam if you are anxious. Some girls don't start until they are 17.
Your period can start at anytime between now and age 18; having discharge is not the sign. It is all the other changes, i.e., breast, pubic hair, hair under the arms, etc. If by 18 no period, then you must be seen by a reproductive endocrinologist.

The average age of menarche or getting your periods in the US is approx. age 12 but that can vary 2years either direction and still be normal. Women who are physically active in sports or who are underweight for height will usually have a normal delay on onset of their periods and this can be normal. Even putting yourself on a calorie restrictive diet without being underweight can cause the delicate start-up of your female hormone cycle to get disrupted and it can delay your first period. Also remember that any STRESS! In your life can negatively impact your female hormone system, putting more male hormone into your system and preventing your periods as well as giving you acne! Please get a copy of my book, Blossoming: Becoming a Woman on Amazon for only $19.95; I outline the myths and truths about the female hormone system and answer a lot of questions that young women have. It’s a great resource for both you and your parents to have, saving you time going to your pediatrician or family practitioner who doesn’t always have enough medical information to help you through this journey.

Usually your period will start about 2 years after you begin seeing under arm hair, if you pass this time and are concerned- make an appointment with your local gynecologist for help.
