Regional anesthesia is a broad term that may be applied to spinal and epidural anesthetics, which are injected into the back, but also regional nerve blocks (femoral, sciatic, brachial plexus, or any nerve branch in your body). Talk with your anesthesiologist.
It depends on site of surgery for arm usually in the neck above the collarbone for lower leg it is in groins area or lower back you can discuss regional anesthetic with your anesthesiologist on day of surgery.
There are many types of regional anesthesia. Blocks, epidural, and spinal block. For regional block, anesthetic is injected in the compartment of nerves. In spinal, it's injected into the spinal canal away from the medulla. In epidural, the anesthesia is injected in the epidural space from any level of the spinal column.
