My friend had a surgery last year under general anesthesia, and he suddenly woke up in the middle of surgery. Why do some people wake up during anesthesia?

Typically anesthesia awareness is a rare occurrence that only occurs during cardiac surgery, trauma surgery, or emergency surgery when patients cannot tolerate receiving normal doses of anesthetic gases. Sometimes it can result due to anesthesia provider fatigue or error.
