The reasons why your elbow hurts when you try to straighten it can be numerous. To properly determine the exact causation of the pain that you are experiencing, a thorough history, a comprehensive physical examination and possible other test may be required to give you the most accurate answer possible. If any physician gives you an answer without matriculating through the process that I just mentioned, the he/she is doing you a disservice.
This can be caused from several structures in and around the elbow. I recommend searching for a Sports Chiropractor and get an evaluation to identify which structures are causing your elbow pain.
Elbows can hurt for a number of reasons, if it is long standing there may be an issue with the alignment in the elbow which a chiropractor could definitely help with, but like you said the most important thing is getting to the cause of the problem and correcting that!
