Dermapathologist Questions Sunburn

ā€œWhy is my daughter's skin getting burnt?ā€

My daughter is 4 years old, and still gets burnt from the sun--even when we put sunscreen on her. We put on 45 SPF. How can I prevent her from being burnt? We are going to Cancun in two weeks and I want to protect her skin the best way I can.

Iā€™m sorry this answer may be a bit late, but in children, especially if they have a fair complexion, sunscreen needs to be applied prior to leaving the comfort of a non-sun area and apply it every two hours when in the sun. Also, certain medications may make you more vulnerable to sunburn.
I suggest investing in stylish SPF style rash guards for both boys and girls to wear in the water. Coupled with a wide brimmed hat and a cute beach tent or umbrella, your child can remain outdoors for longer without suffering burns. Also consider taking a shaded lunch break at mid day, while the sun is strongest. Many websites specialize in sun protective clothing and accessories. Have fun and be safe!
You can buy clothing that has SPF labels, and don't go out between 10 am and 2 pm when the sun is brightest. You may have to get SPF 80 sunscreen if she is very fair.
