OB-GYN (Obstetrician-Gynecologist) Questions Pregnancy Tests

If my pregnancy test is negative, why are my periods delayed?

I am a 26year old woman, with an active sex life. My periods which are normally on time, have been delayed by 10 days. My pregnancy test shows a negative result. What could be the reason for the delay? How many days after an intercourse should the pregnancy show up?

This may be isolated. If it persists, follow up with your doc to assess you.
There may be many reasons for an occasional delay in menses without a pregnancy. A repeat pregnancy test may be warranted, but a visit to your gynecologist is recommended if this delay persists or recurs.

New home pregnancy test are very active, but should be used when the urine is the most concentrated. So always use the first morning urine to test for pregnancy and do so at or around the time of expected periods. See your doctor for more accurate blood pregnancy testing, if there is an uncertainty.
Hormonal lmbalance
There could be many reasons for your periods to be delayed apart from positive pregnancy test. Reasons could range from hormone imbalance, thyroid problems, pituitary tumors, etc. Please see your OBGyn if you have no period within the next 2-3 weeks for further tests. If your periods are regular then the pregnancy test should be positive 2 weeks after your missed period or 4 weeks after your first day of last menstrual period.

Hope this helps,
Take care!
You may be having delyed menses because you are not ovulating on a regular basis. Your doctor can order some lab work to see it you are ovulating. If you do not ovulate (release an egg) on a regular basis you decrease your chance of getting pregnant.
Anything can throw of your menses (i.e. stress). One episode is not one for concern. Keep a menstrual calendar and if continues, then please go get evaluated by your gyn.
