Will an x-ray help the doctor see whether hand is broken or fractured? How else can doctors tell? I am a drummer and my hands are essential to me.

Yes, it will be very helpful; 99.9 percent!
Plain film X-rays are the best way to evaluate for broken hand bones. Typically, the hand is X-rayed in the frontal, lateral, and oblique projections.
Hope this helps.
