New Technology Could Minimize Breast Cancer Radiation Side Effects

How does it work?

The system alerts physicians about small motions that patients may take, which could affect the accuracy of delivery of the radiation. When this occurs, the patients are allowed to go ahead and breathe normally for a while and the radiation is promptly turned off. This gives the patients a chance to take a short break and recuperate for a little while. After that, they can hold their breath again for a second attempt at administering more radiation to treat their tumors. The monitoring system allows the benefit of accurate delivery without requiring extensive immobilization of the patients like in other radiation delivery systems.
