Olympic Gymnast Shannon Miller Discusses Fighting for Her Life
Being caught off balance
Being a new mother to her one year old son, Rocco and having recently launched her company, Shannon Miller Lifestyle: Health and Fitness for Women, Miller felt she was too busy to go in for her regular checkup. Fortunately, she had a change of heart. “I started thinking – I was working in the health field interviewing physicians for my weekly radio show talking about early detection, and I thought ‘I’m not setting a good example by skipping an exam’” she said.
During a routine pelvic exam, Miller’s doctor uncovered a mass on her ovary the size of a baseball. It turned out to be an ovarian germ cell tumor – a rare form of ovarian cancer. It was later on that Miller realized she had actually experienced the symptoms of ovarian cancer – abdominal pain, bloating, and weight on – but brushed them off as being less serious.
