  • My nephew has one tooth erupting and he is just 1 month old. Is it normal?

Your nephew is simply ahead of the curve. Normal eruption times are given as a range, and while the first teeth are usually seen at 4-6 months, some babies are born with them already erupted! Don't worry at all about this. READ MORE

  • Are these crackling sounds in my ear from TMJ?

First, a majority of the adult population has some amount of noise in their TMJ (Jaw joint), with no adverse affects, so that alone is not a major concern.  However, without knowing your history, I would recommend an exam by an orthodontist.  Having previous "TMJ issues" would raise concerns about a progressive condition that is now worsening, or a return to the same problems from the past.  Good news is that most of the problems with the TMJ can be helped with custom orthotic mouthpieces, that will move the jaw into a position that allows the problem to heal itself, but a detailed diagnosis is needed to discover the cause, or to rule out anything serious, like arthritis, or trauma. • Wisdom teeth removal

It's a simple matter of what complications can be foreseen. Wisdom teeth may be small, and fully erupted with straight roots, or they can be large, fully impacted (still buried in the bone), and sideways in the jaw. They are also prone to having odd shaped roots that can easily fracture during extraction, making the procedure much more complex. Oral surgeons have as much as six extra years of training in complex surgical procedures, so if your general dentist refers you, trust that he sees something he doesn't want to, or can't, address.  It is also true that many general dentists have procedures that they enjoy, and others that they do not. Surgery is one of those procedures that many dentists prefer to refer out as a rule, preferring to focus on other areas instead. • Adult tooth is loose. What should I do?

You should get to a dentist immediately.  The tooth can be stabilized there, and an xray is needed to rule out fracture of root or bone.  The tooth probably is in no danger of falling out, depending on the extent of the damage, but you can expect the possibility of needing root canal treatment now, or in future, as trauma like this can damage the nerve, even if tooth tightens back up.  It is important also to make sure tooth is in the same position it was before accident.
