A part of Ascension, Seton Heart Institute is a multi-specialty academic healthcare network delivering heart care from the simplest condition to the most complex. The Institute’s affiliation with The University of Texas Medical School adds to its already extensive heart and vascular care services.

Alongside his clinical role, Dr. Cauthen serves as the Program Director for the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin. In addition, he sits on the Curriculum Committee and lectures first- and second-year medical students in cardiology as an Assistant Professor within the Department of Internal Medicine.

The doctor’s acclaimed career in medicine began after he earned his medical degree from East Tennessee State University – Quillen College of Medicine in 2005. Wanting to further his education, he performed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Virginia, followed by his fellowship in cardiovascular medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

“When I was a young adult, I thought that I would be a scientist and a teacher. After doing research and teaching for years, I decided that I wanted to help people by combining teaching, science and human interaction. Thus, I became a doctor” expressed Dr. Cauthen.

With unsurpassed professional skills, he is board-certified in cardiovascular disease & advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

To advance his professional efforts, he remains a member of several professional organizations, including the Travis County Medical Society, the American Heart Association, and the American College of Physicians.

Cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the disorders of the heart, as well as the circulatory system. The field includes medical diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease, and electrophysiology.
