    A regular prophy or dental cleaning according to ADA is cleaning the surface of the teeth until the gum margin. Cleaning under the gum margin not very deep may cause soreness of gums. It is also a better way of dental cleaning by a dentist. Use of ultrasonic devices to clean teeth will not cause much soreness compared to use of hand instruments. Hand instruments if not used gently can rip of gums & cause soreness . In short, any procedure that is not gently performed on a human body will cause soreness, pain & swelling.
