Dr. Aung-Din practices General Neurology & Neuro-Psychiatry and sees the entire age range of patients from infancy to geriatric age. He is board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology and member, American Academy of Neurology.
After obtaining Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in engineering at Bucknell (Lewisburg, PA) and Cornell (Ithaca, NY) Universities, he worked for a period as a supervising engineer. He then attended Columbia University in New York City for Premedical studies, followed by Medical School at University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Dallas, TX. Residencies in Neurology and Neurosurgery were at University of Florida, Gainesville, FL. Other studies included a Medical Student Fellowship in Cardiology at Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, England and Clinical Neurology Fellowship at National Hospital for Nervous Disease, Queen Square, London, UK.
He has participated in over 60 pharmaceutical industry-sponsored clinical trials, functioning as Principal Investigator in drug research studies in MS, epilepsy, pain, Parkinson’s disease, and other neurological diseases. Dr. Aung-Din is also active in treating varied neurological and psychiatric conditions using delivery of CNS-active drugs with Neuro-DirectTM/Direct EffectsTM technology, developed by him for which 13 US and foreign patents have been granted; with others pending. Publications using this novel therapy in autism spectrum disorder, migraine, Parkinson’s disease, and diabetic neuropathy; in addition to articles on the use of cannabidiol, CBD, and the non-cannabis cannabinoid receptor agonist, caryophyllene, have appeared in Drug Development and Delivery and other peer-reviewed medical journals.
Neuro-Direct TechnologyTM is unique in that therapeutic effect occurs through receptors on cutaneous free-nerve endings under the skin surface with direct afferent neural connections to the central nervous system, CNS. As such, the general circulation and blood-brain-barrier are bypassed, with avoidance of usual systemic side effects and drug interactions.
AfGin Pharma, LLC was founded by Dr. Aung-Din in 2009 to advance this unique technology and its goal of “Enhanced Neuro-Therapeutics through Direct Effects Topical Technology.”

Get to know Neurologist and Neuropsychiatrist Dr. Ronald Aung-Din, who serves patients in Florida.
Dr. Aung-Din is a board-certified neurologist who has practiced general neurology & neuro-psychiatry in Sarasota, Florida for over thirty years.
Treating neurological and neuro-psychiatric conditions in both adults and children, he particularly specializes in autism spectrum disorder, seizures, headaches, stroke, pain, fibromyalgia, peripheral neuropathy; as well as mood disorders, insomnia, and PTSD. However, he sees patients within the entire spectrum of neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders.
Despite a busy practice, Dr. Aung-Din still managed to see underserved patients without health insurance at Epilepsy Services’ Sarasota office. He also served a number of terms on the Board of Josh Provides, an epilepsy assistance nonprofit foundation.
His dedication and compassion demonstrate his desire to help empower these patients toward self-management to be able to lead as close to a normal life as possible. Without his help, this may not have been possible. A high percentage of patients can gain and maintain control of their seizures and feel better physically and emotionally. They also gain a greater degree of personal dignity and independence.
Dr. Aung-Din was the first physician in Sarasota to be certified by the Florida Department of Health to prescribe medical cannabis; and the 11th in the entire State when it became legalized.
He incorporates medical cannabis into his practice for his patients who would benefit from its use for such conditions as chronic pain, seizures, cancer, MS, and other immune-based disorders; as well as many other disorders which may be inadequately treated with traditional pharmaceuticals. He has discovered medical cannabis and CBD work to augment as well as replace certain current traditional therapies.
He has been sought by patients with difficult neurological conditions locally, nationally, and from abroad to incorporate cannabinoid medicine into their treatment regimens. He uses medical cannabis where appropriate and legal; as well as his proprietary direct effects CBD and other non-THC cannabinoid products which work non-systemically without involvement of the bloodstream and its associated side effects.
Conditions treated in his practice which have benefitted from these non-systemic CBD topical cream therapies include seizures, autism, fibromyalgia, neuropathies including diabetic peripheral neuropathy, spinal neuropathic pain, Parkinson’s disease and related movement disorders; anxiety and sleep issues; and many others.
After studies in mechanical and environmental engineering at Bucknell (Lewisburg, Pennsylvania) and Cornell (Ithaca, New York) Universities, Dr. Aung-Din worked for a period in industry as supervising engineer. He then attended Columbia University in New York City for premedical studies, followed by medical school at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.
Furthering his education, his studies included a medical student fellowship in cardiology at Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford and a clinical neurology postgraduate fellowship at National Hospital for Nervous Disease in Queen Square, London, United Kingdom.
An active member of the American Academy of Neurology, the doctor is board-certified in neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to serving the professions of psychiatry and neurology.
Highly respected by his employees and other physicians in the area, Dr. Aung-Din founded AfGin Pharma, LLC in 2009 to advance the unique non-systemic direct effects technology and its goal of “Enhanced Neuro-Therapeutics through Direct Effects Topical Technology.”
Neurology is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system. Neurologists are licensed medical specialists who diagnose and treat disorders that affect the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles of patients. They examine a patient’s mental and physical status, conduct medical tests and scans, and evaluate the results to diagnose and treat the patient.
Having participated in over 60 pharmaceutical industry-sponsored clinical trials, Dr. Aung-Din has helped bring to market current drugs for MS, epilepsy, post-herpetic neuralgia, and other neurologic conditions.
Attesting to the novel and revolutionary nature of the NeuroDirect drug delivery technology, he has, to date, been granted 13 US and foreign patents, with several others pending. Four of the granted patents relate to the use of CBD and other cannabinoids in humans and animals.
An authority in his field, Dr. Aung-Din actively attends and speaks at events across the world, as well as goes on medical missionary trips, providing medical care to those in need. He has specifically made 14 trips to Haiti.
He attributes his success to adhering with solemn intent to the Original Hippocratic Oath he took upon graduation from medical school and to the “4 A’s of success: Availability, Ability, Affability; and the most important which underlies the previous 3 A’s: Attitude, towards his privileged calling for the welfare of others; and keeping in mind that physicians are only instruments in the healing process as The Great Physician is ultimately responsible for the outcome.
Living in Florida, Dr. Aung-Din feels fortunate to be living where people from other parts like to vacation.
