Get to know Internist Dr. Leslie Douglas-Churchwell, who serves patients in New Haven, Connecticut.

Featuring over 19 years of experience, Dr. Douglas-Churchwell is a board-certified internist whose interests include women’s health, preventive medicine, and cardiovascular disease. In addition to being an Instructor at the Yale School of Medicine, she is affiliated with Yale Medicine-Internal Medicine Associates in New Haven, Connecticut.

“Our practice focuses on adult primary care and is known for its excellence and emphasis on prevention and wellness, while managing potential medical problems as they arise. When specialized care is needed, our physicians work closely and collaboratively with Yale Medicine’s many specialists. Our goal is to provide you with the highest quality, personalized healthcare,” as stated on their website.

The doctor’s earliest medical mentors were her father, Dr. Clarence E. Douglas, and her grandfather, Dr. Raymond D. Douglas. Both of them were graduates of Meharry Medical College. Observing their medical rounds and interactions with patients was rewarding and fascinating, and it planted the seed for Dr. Douglas-Churchwell’s medical career.

After graduating from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, she went on to earn her medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. Upon graduation, she completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at Emory University in Atlanta.

Following her education, Dr. Douglas-Churchwell became board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine, a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

In order to stay at the forefront of her challenging specialty, she remains a member of the Tennessee Women’s Association and the American Heart Association. She is also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Internal medicine or general medicine is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. Physicians specializing in internal medicine are called internists. They manage and prevent common and complex diseases by providing comprehensive care and promoting overall well-being.

Originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Dr. Douglas-Churchwell enjoys reading, doing crossword puzzles, and traveling when she is not working. Her favorite vacation spots include Sea Island (Georgia), Paris, London, and New York City. She attributes her success to working hard, being passionate about her profession, and being dedicated to providing quality patient care. “Be kind to everyone, never burn bridges, and give every patient the care that you would want for your own family member,” she stated.
