What is the connection between being overweight and the inability to conceive?
Great question! The comment made to you is very vague and not 100% accurate. There has been a link between being overweight and developing PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). Patients with PCOS can often have a harder time conceiving. Traditionally, doctors always told patients to lose some weight and they should ovulate. Studies do show that a weight loss of even 10-15 pounds can return an anovulatory (no release of egg) female to an ovulatory (releasing eggs) state. That being said, I recommend an ultrasound of the uterus and ovaries to evaluate for PCOS and also some hormonal bloodwork to determine if you indeed have PCOS. If so, they are some medications that can be used to help you get pregnant. I hope this was helpful and if you are nearby, please feel free to come see for an appointment to discuss. Sincerely, Richard T. Burke, MD READ MORE
Can a home pregnancy test show a wrong reading?
Good afternoon, Home pregnancy tests are good, but they are not great. I recommend going into your doctor's office for a blood test to confirm or rule out a pregnancy definitively. Don't waste your money on a lot of different home pregnancy tests, they may read different results and just confuse the whole thing, call your MD and ask for a confirmation of pregnancy in their office. Good luck and please take your prenatal vitamins. Sincerely, Richard T. Burke, MD READ MORE
What other options do I have to prevent pregnancy?
Good Afternoon, Great question! There are many different forms of contraception available for women today. Most are centered around hormonal contraception, either containing estrogen and progesterone (pills, NuvaRing, or patch) but here are also progesterone only available (Nexplanon, Depo shot and IUD). I generally taylor the form of contraception to the individual patient based on their needs and the time frame they want to have birth control. I also like to discuss the patients concerns about side effects of these medications. As for non-hormonal, there is natural family planning. This includes keeping a menstrual calendar, using barrier protection (the condom use you mentioned) and withdrawal methods. If you living near by McMinnville, TN then please make an appointment and we can discuss together in more detail. I hope this was helpful, have a great evening and happy new year! Sincerely, Richard T. Burke, MD READ MORE
