  • My eyes feel very dry after LASIK. What could be the cause for this?

Hello, It is very common for the eyes to be dry after LASIK surgery. Some of the small nerves in the cornea are disrupted when the LASIK flap is made. This decreases the amount of tears your eyes make. It often takes several months or even a year for the nerves to heal completely. Artificial tears are the best treatment. There are many good brands available over-the-counter. Systane and Refresh are examples. If you need to use the drops more than 4 times a day to keep the eyes comfortable, you should get a Preservative-free version. If your symptoms persist despite using tears frequently, talk to your eye surgeon about other possible treatment options (such as punctal plugs or Restasis). Luckily the dryness usually improves over time as your cornea heals. Best regards, Dr. Lindsey READ MORE

  • What is the reason for double vision following an accident?

Hello, Double vision after an accident can have several causes. ***If he is having any headache or drooping eyelid along with the double vision, he should be seen in the Emergency Room immediately, as this can be part of a very serious condition.*** If your husband hit his head at all, this could be related to a cranial nerve injury or a facial bone fracture. If he has had previous eye surgery, something may have gotten knocked out of place (such as a lens implant from cataract surgery or a corneal flap after LASIK). If the double vision is the only issue and the symptoms have not resolved, I would recommend that he see an ophthalmologist for a thorough exam to evaluate his eye muscles and their movements. This will help to narrow down the possible causes and direct further testing. Wishing your husband a speedy recovery, Dr. Lindsey READ MORE

  • Anything to watch out for when using glaucoma eye drops?

Hello, Lumigan can typically make your eyes red for the first few weeks that you are using it. This commonly goes away with time. One other side effect that some people actually enjoy is the tendency for eyelashes to grow longer and thicker. There aren't any specific food interactions you need to worry about. It is always a good idea to have a diet rich in antioxidants and leafy green vegetables to support eye health. Also, avoid smoking and excessive UV light exposure to help protect your eyes. • My eye looks different because of my astigmatism. Anything I can do?

Astigmatism is a change in the shape of the cornea (the clear window in front of the eye). There are some surgical procedures that ophthalmologists can do to correct astigmatism. However, it would be very uncommon for astigmatism to change the way your eye looks. I wonder if you might have a pterygium (growth caused by sun damage) or other condition affecting the surface of the eye? It is a good idea to make an appointment with an Ophthalmologist (Eye MD) who can take a good look at the eye to determine what is causing the change in appearance. READ MORE
