Get to know Gynecologic Oncologist Dr. Matthew L. Anderson, who serves patients in Tampa, Florida.
A seasoned gynecologic oncologist, Dr. Anderson is the Medical Director of the Office of Clinical Research and Associate Director for Shared Resources at Tampa General Hospital. He is also a Tenured Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of South Florida.
Back in the early days of his academic career, he graduated with his medical degree and earned his PhD from the Yale University School of Medicine, before completing his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Yale-New Haven Hospital in 1999. Finally, he completed his fellowship in gynecologic oncology at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in 2002.
With an unwavering commitment to his specialty, the doctor is board-certified in both obstetrics and gynecology & gynecologic oncology by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). The mission of the ABOG is to define specialty standards, certify obstetricians and gynecologists, and facilitate continuous learning to advance knowledge, practice, and professionalism in women’s health.

Gynecologic oncology is a specialized field of medicine that focuses on cancers of the female reproductive system, including ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, vaginal cancer, cervical cancer, and vulvar cancer. A gynecologic oncologist is a physician who specializes in treating women with reproductive tract cancers. They are initially trained as obstetrician/gynecologists and then undergo three to possibly more than five years of specialized education in all the effective forms of treatment for gynecologic cancers (surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and experimental treatments) as well as the biology and pathology of gynecologic cancers.
