Chicago Hepatologist Combines Expertise in Liver Disease and Metabolic Syndrome to Enhance Patient Care

Chicago, Illinois – Sujit V. Janardhan, MD, PhD, dipl ABOM, is making significant strides in the field of hepatology as the Medical Director of Liver Transplant,  Director of the Weight Intervention in Liver Disease Clinical Program and Cofounder of the Metabolic Health Consortium at Rush University Medical Center. With a deep academic background and extensive clinical and research experience, Dr. Janardhan is at the forefront of integrating comprehensive metabolic health into the management of patients with liver disease, with a focus on Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD).

Dr. Janardhan is affiliated with Rush University Medical Group and has practice locations at RUSH Hepatology – Chicago, RUSH Lincoln Park, RUSH River North, and North Shore Center for Gastroenterology in Libertyville, IL. Dr. Janardhan treats the entire spectrum of liver disease from simple to complex including the management of those patients with liver cancer or liver failure requiring a liver transplant. Dr. Janardhan’s passion is preventative hepatology: with a goal to prevent liver disease progression and avoid liver failure altogether. When it comes to MASLD, his innovative approach focuses on addressing the critical link between obesity, metabolic health, and liver health, empowering patients with the tools and knowledge to achieve weight loss and improve their overall health outcomes. “Several years ago, I obtained specialized training in obesity medicine and developed a passion for comprehensive metabolic health management” Dr. Janardhan stated. “I can’t tell you how much of a difference it’s made in my practice to be able to help people with steatotic liver disease — to give them the tools, the strength, and the knowledge to actually affect weight loss and promote liver and global metabolic health.”

Dr. Janardhan’s educational journey is remarkable. He graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biological Sciences and Computer Science from The George Washington University. He then attended The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, where he earned his PhD in Immunology in 2007 and his MD in 2008. His postgraduate training included a residency and internship in internal medicine and a fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

A Diplomate of both the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Obesity Medicine, Dr. Janardhan is also an active member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Gastroenterology Association, Obesity Medicine Association, the American Liver Foundation, the Chronic Liver Disease Foundation and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. His commitment to excellence in the field is further exemplified by his membership in Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest academic honor society in the United States.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Janardhan holds the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition at Rush Medical College. He is deeply involved in educating and mentoring the next generation of healthcare professionals, while also contributing to the advancement of research in his field.

Dr. Janardhan has been recognized with multiple prestigious awards throughout his career, reflecting his dedication to advancing medical science and mentoring future professionals. Notably, he was honored as the American Liver Foundation Debate Winner (Mentor) in 2018, building on his previous recognition as the 2012 Debate Winner. His contributions to hepatology research were further acknowledged in 2014 when he received the AASLD Presidential Poster of Distinction. Additionally, his academic achievements were recognized in 2008 with The Leon O. Jacobson Prize and The Richard W. Reilly Award from The University of Chicago.

As Dr. Sujit V. Janardhan continues to shape the future of liver health care at Rush University Medical Center, his focus on the intersection of obesity and liver disease offers hope and improved outcomes for patients suffering from these interconnected conditions.
