Get to know Urologist Dr. Richard B. Alexander, who serves patients throughout the State of Massachusetts.

A competent urologist, Dr. Alexander is affiliated with Baystate Urology, serving patients in the Greenfield and Northampton areas. He also maintains hospital privileges at Baystate Franklin Medical Center, Baystate Medical Center, and Baystate Wing Hospital.

The team of professionals at Baystate Urology specialize in treating problems in the urinary tract and men’s genital organs. They are experts in robot-assisted procedures to treat prostate cancer, urinary incontinence, and other conditions. In fact, Baystate urological surgeons were among the first in Western Massachusetts to perform minimally invasive surgery to care for urological problems.

Back in the early days of his academic career, Dr. Alexander graduated with his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1981. He completed his residency in general surgery at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 1983, and returned to Johns Hopkins to complete his residency in urology in 1989.

With an unwavering commitment to his specialty, the doctor is board-certified in urology by the American Board of Urology (ABU). The mission of the ABU is to act for the benefit of the public by establishing and maintaining standards of certification for urologists, and working with certified urologists to achieve lifelong learning to ensure the delivery of high quality, safe, and ethical urologic care.

Urology, also known as genitourinary surgery, is the branch of medicine that focuses on surgical and medical diseases of the male and female urinary-tract system and the male reproductive organs. Urologists specialize in diseases of the urinary tract and the male reproductive system. Patients may be referred to a urologist if their physician suspects they may need treatment for a condition relating to the bladder, prostate, urethra, ureters, kidneys, and adrenal glands.
