What should I do with a smashed toe?
You should try to see an orthopedic or podiatry specialist as soon as arrangements can be made. Especially as you are diabetic, you are prone to potential complications. An x-ray must be obtained to rule out a fracture. Sometimes the bleeding underneath the nail can cause excessive pain which can be relieved by making a small hole in the nail to let the blood out which will help her pain a lot. Continue elevation and when you walk use a stiff-soled shoe. READ MORE
Feels like they will POP!
If the pain is severe you should be evaluated in person by a qualified orthopedic specialist, podiatrist, or sports medicine specialist. Hands-on assessment is important and you may need blood tests and x-rays to be performed. If you cant get a sooner appointment I would at least get an initial evaluation at an urgent care. If the pain was not so sick you could try home remedies including warm soaks and using heel pads which are available in most pharmacies as well as over-the-counter anti-inflammatories such as Advil but by your description, you need a more urgent assessment. Can a chiropractor help with ankle mobility?
Yes, chiropractic can be helpful. It is difficult to generalize but in my experience chiropractors do a great job of rehabilitating spinal injuries such as neck or back. I think in general physical therapist do a better job of rehabilitating extremity injuries. But it comes down to finding a caring and competent provider. You can get good results with an excellent chiropractor or excellent physical therapist. READ MORE
Muscle aches?
There are many specialties that would be able to address your husband's concerns. Consider consulting with an orthopedic surgeon, physical medicine specialist, rheumatologist or sports medicine specialist. READ MORE
When is surgery needed for flat feet?
Surgery is rarely indicated for flat feet. Most flat feet do not cause pain and therefore there is no need for surgical correction. In the rare event that the flat foot is painful, additional evaluation is necessary including MRI and CAT scan of the foot and surgery would be considered if conservative management fails including physical therapy, orthotics, medications and lotions and acupuncture and the pain remains disabling. In that case you should consult an experienced foot and ankle surgeon. READ MORE
I have a broken arm with no ability to get a cast?
This is unfortunate. I do not know where you live, but nearly all over the country there are free clinics that will provide your treatment without charging you. Please check with the Department of Social Services in your area. You can also likely qualify for Medicaid if your financial condition is not good and there are methods that you can get the Medicaid almost instantaneously. Also, most children's hospitals will provide free treatment including cast application if you do not have the ability to pay. If you have tried every measure and are not successful, you can roll a magazine and then wrap that around your arm as an extra support, which will give it immobilization to allow it to heal. But please check all available avenues and I am almost certain that you can get free medical care in this situation. READ MORE
Pain in my back on the right side?
Sounds like you strained your back. Take the first usual measures. Apply ice packs for the first week and then moist heat. Take Advil but no more than 6 per day with food and/or Tylenol no more than 4 per day. Do some stretching and walk to tolerance. If the pain does not resolve or worsens seek medical evaluation. READ MORE
Constant hip pain?
The pain you are describing may come from your hip joint or your lower back. You should be evaluated by someone familiar with hip and back evaluation, which can include a chiropractor, a physical therapist, sports physician, or orthopedic doctor. READ MORE
What should I do if my ankle hurts after running?
Take the usual first self-care steps. Make sure that you have proper running shoes. Make sure you are running on proper surfaces. I tell people with ankle pain to run on their high school track designed for running. Use over-the-counter anti-inflammatory such as Advil or Aleve. Taking it 1 hour before running helps. If these self-care measures are not helpful then definitely should consult with a musculoskeletal specialist. This includes a podiatrist, orthopedic doctor, physical medicine doctor or a family practitioner specializing in sports medicine. Consulting with athletic trainers and physical therapists can also be helpful.. READ MORE
My head is like crackling and feels weird an my neck hurt this is all time?
I am not a neurologist therefore I cannot comment on your headaches. If you have a history of seizure disorder and headaches, I would advise you to consult a neurologist. Regarding your neck pain, I need to have more detail. There may be many sources of continuous neck pain but definitely you should consult a specialist in this regard. After examination the specialist will plan a course of treatment and diagnosis for you READ MORE
Right shoulder pain?
The usual cause of shoulder pain at nighttime is a shoulder rotator cuff tear or tendinitis. I am concerned because of the history of colorectal cancer and so there would be concern for metastasis causing pain. This would be ruled out by obtaining an X-ray, bone scan, and MRI study. You should consult a specialist. READ MORE
How do you fix a dislocated ankle at home?
You cannot fix a truly dislocated ankle at home. If it is dislocated it needs to be relocated in the emergency room or hospital setting. Perhaps you do not have a true ankle dislocation but some other problem and therefore you should be evaluated by a specialist READ MORE
What do the results of my full spine x-ray mean?
Nothing in the findings to worry about. People have slight differences in the appearance of the spine and that may not necessarily explain the cause of back pain or implicate future back problems. They key point is not to let anybody make you worry about the findings and receive unnecessary treatment. X-rays are a good screening tool but do not always explain the source of pain or disability . Are funny bones a thing and how rare is it to not have one?
Interesting question. I am not sure that there is such a thing as a funny bone. Usually it is referred to the elbow when it is struck it and you have unusual pain. But not everyone responds the same with trauma. There is a rare condition where individuals do not respond to pain at all. Hopefully you do not have that condition. READ MORE
What causes hand tingling and numbness?
There may be many causes. It could stem from a pinched nerve in your neck or perhaps an injury to the armpit area where the brachial plexus is. The most common cause is carpal tunnel syndrome which is compression of the nerve in the wrist but usually that occurs in individuals somewhat older than yourself. Sometimes sleeping the wrong way on your shoulder can put excess pressure on the brachial plexus causing numbness and tingling in the arm. Regardless, if the problem is not resolving, he should have it evaluated by a specialist. READ MORE
I have knee pain?
I need more detailed information to answer your question. What is the level of pain in the knee? You have difficulty walking standing or squatting? Have you had x-rays done? Your knee may make noises but not necessarily is that bad. READ MORE
How long after bunion surgery can you exercise?
Re: Walking or running, you should obtain advice from your surgeon. However, you can do upper extremity exercises. Work out with dumbbells and in the gym with the weight machines to maintain upper body strength and avoid disuse atrophy. Exercising in the water is a very good way to rehabilitate following surgery, but ask your surgeon when it would be safe. READ MORE
What is the best painkiller after spine surgery?
The trend is away from heavy duty narcotics secondary to multiple reasons. First of which is potential for addiction and then many secondary side effects including respiratory depression and constipation. A combination of Tylenol Extra Strength and Celebrex can be effective in controlling moderate pain. If a narcotic is needed usually I recommend tramadol. Tramadol when combined with Tylenol is nearly as effective as Norco and far less addictive with far lower negative side effects. Many studies showed that patients do much worse when using heavy duty narcotics even in terms of recovery. READ MORE
Is it bad to stop using an immobilizer for my dislocated kneecap just 3 days after dislocating?
If your knee frequently dislocates, using an immobilizer for just a few days is reasonable. There is no long-term benefit for longer use. If you have dislocated so many times, you should consult a surgeon about a normal repair. Repeated dislocations will result in arthritis and need for knee replacement surgery at an early age. How long before you can drive after rotator cuff surgery?
This is a question you should be asking your surgeon. Different surgeons have different protocols. Also it depends on if the rotator cuff was actually repaired or debrided. So if I debride the rotator cuff I allow immediate motion and my patients can drive immediately once they feel comfortable. For a rotator cuff repair with actual use of suture anchors I go much more slowly and keep the patient in a sling for 6 weeks. After that they can drive if it is then non-dominant arm but if it is the dominant arm not for 3 months postop. But once again check with your surgeon for instructions. READ MORE
