Get to know Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Thomas Muzzonigro, who serves patients in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Since 2001, Dr. Muzzonigro has been a part of the Hip & Knee Reconstruction Team at Tri Rivers Musculoskeletal Centers. He sees patients at the Butler–Clearview office in Pennsylvania.

A top professional in the field of orthopaedic surgery, some of the conditions that he treats / clinical services that he provides include: knee arthritis, hip arthritis, total knee replacement, arthroscopic knee surgery (including ACL reconstruction), total hip replacement, injection therapy for arthritic conditions, specialty bracing, and focused rehabilitation.

The staff at Tri Rivers Musculoskeletal Centers cares for patients in six convenient locations in Allegheny and Butler counties, including two offices each in the Butler and Cranberry communities, and one each in North Hills and Slippery Rock. The  clinical team comprises 12 orthopaedic surgeons, one primary care sports medicine specialist, six physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists (physiatrists), and two rheumatologists — covering the broad spectrum of musculoskeletal care.

Following the completion of his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1995, Dr. Muzzonigro went on to further his training. He performed his internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where he served as chief resident from 1999–2000 and as a clinical instructor in orthopaedics.

Thereafter, he attained board certification through the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopaedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopaedic surgeons.

Continuously advancing his efforts, Dr. Muzzonigro is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (Fellow; on the Board of Councilors), the American Association of Hip & Knee Surgeons, the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society, the Pennsylvania Medical Society, and the Allegheny County Medical Society. 

His current hospital affiliations include: UPMC Passavant Hospital, McCandless Campus; UPMC Passavant Hospital, Cranberry Campus; and Butler Memorial Hospital.

Professionally, Dr. Muzzonigro is the Orthopaedic Services Director at Butler Memorial Hospital, and the Team Physician for the Pine-Richland Fighting Rams Athletic Department. He also participates in Operation Walk Pittsburgh by traveling to Central America to perform knee and hip replacements on poverty-stricken individuals who are unable to afford orthopaedic care.

Orthopaedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.

Throughout his line of work, Dr. Muzzonigro has written numerous articles on orthopaedic topics, including trauma, sports medicine, and gene therapy for arthritis. He has also lectured on health education and serves as team physician for area high schools. 

In his personal life, he is a sports enthusiast, a fun-loving husband, and a father of three collegiate athletes.
