Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. Laurence R. Weissman, who serves patients in Elmhurst, New York.
Dr. Weissman is an engaging and detail-oriented ophthalmologist specializing in routine and complex cataract and glaucoma surgery. He has been in clinical practice since 1984, seeing patients at Vision NYC – Queens in Elmhurst, New York.
He welcomes new patients and takes an interest in all aspects of a patient’s experience in order to better serve his or her needs. “I feel fortunate to have the privilege of evaluating my patients and I can promise that I will give 100% of my attention and skill to each of them” he stated.
The Vision NYC team serves all routine and complex eye care needs, specializing in dry eye disease, contact lens care, cataract surgery, Laser Vision Correction (LASIK/PRK), glaucoma surgery, and corneal transplantation. They stand apart based on their commitment to patient care, customer service, and education.
A native New Yorker, Dr. Weissman completed his undergraduate work, Summa Cum Laude, at New York University. He then went on to earn his medical degree from New York University Grossman School of Medicine in 1980.
He decided early in his studies to pursue ophthalmology and was ultimately offered a residency at SUNY/Downstate, where he was trained in all phases of ocular clinical diagnosis, pathology, and surgical technique. Having a special affinity for surgery, he subsequently focused a great deal of his time and energy on developing innovative techniques that improve the patients’ experiences and outcomes.
Like most Brooklynites, Dr. Weissman is passionate, especially when it comes to patient care and well-being. He serves as Program Director for the Ophthalmology Residency Training Program at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where his considerable surgical experience and diagnostic insight are invaluable to the residents he oversees. He also remains affiliated with New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai & Flushing Hospital Medical Center.
A Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, he is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO). The ABO is an independent, non-profit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists in the United States of America.
Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing, as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and perform cataract, glaucoma, retinal, and corneal surgery.
As much as he is passionate about ophthalmology, Dr. Weissman adheres to an unshakable belief in the strong mind/strong body correlative, and to that end, he is an avid cyclist and gym rat.
