Get to know Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. Bindu A. Balani, who serves patients in Hackensack, New Jersey.

Dr. Balani, a fellowship-trained infectious disease specialist, works within the Center for Infectious Diseases at Hackensack University Medical Center. She cares for patients with infections that are difficult to diagnose and treat, and can be life-threatening.

The infectious disease physicians and nurses at Hackensack University Medical Center provide comprehensive, compassionate care. While a primary care physician can easily manage many infections, a consultation with an infectious disease specialist may be appropriate when the diagnosis is in doubt, when the infection is severe, or when issues of antibiotic intolerance or resistance complicate therapeutic decisions. 

The doctor’s acclaimed career in medicine began after she earned her medical degree from Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences in India in 1994. She then relocated to the United States, performing her residency in internal medicine at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in 1998, and her fellowship in infectious diseases at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 2000.

Dedicated to her speciality, Dr. Balani is board-certified in infectious disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Infectious disease is a medical specialty dealing with the prevention, the diagnosis, and the treatment of all infections. An infectious disease specialist’s practice also consists of managing nosocomial (hospital-acquired) infections.
