Get to know Gastroenterologist Dr. Sushil Rattan, who serves the Greenbelt, Maryland area at his private practice, GI Med Health. Dr. Rattan earned his initial training in Gastroenterology in United Kingdom where he was granted membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 1998. In the United States, he completed fellowships in Hepatology from Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia and in Gastroenterology from Georgetown University Hospital in Washington D.C. Dr. Rattan has been certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Gastroenterology. Dr Rattan is especially interested in early detection of Colorectal Cancer and Liver diseases. He has one of the largest cohorts of viral hepatitis patients in the PG county and Montgomery county. He regularly attends major conferences to keep himself up-to-date with latest developments and advances in gastroenterology to provide state of the art treatment and excellent patient care. Dr. Rattan has published extensively in major American journals and has written papers on “Liver Transplantation” and “Drug Induced Liver Injury,” in addition to several abstracts on a multitude subjects including treatment of Crohn’s disease, endoscopic ultrasound in the diagnosis of gastric and pancreatic tumors. To stay up-to-date on developments in the field, Dr. Rattan maintains professional memberships in the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and the American Gastroenterology Association. In addition to his private practice, Dr. Rattan is affiliated with Doctors Community Hospital, which allows him to reach a wide variety of patients. Gastroenterology is the study of the normal function and diseases of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver. It involves a detailed understanding of the normal action (physiology) of the gastrointestinal organs including the movement of material through the stomach and intestine (motility), the digestion and absorption of nutrients into the body, removal of waste from the system, and the function of the liver as a digestive organ. It includes common and important conditions such as colon polyps and cancer, hepatitis, gastroesophageal reflux (heartburn), peptic ulcer disease, colitis, gallbladder and biliary tract disease, nutritional problems, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and pancreatitis. In essence, all normal activity and disease of the digestive organs are part of the study of Gastroenterology. Dr. Rattan speaks Hindi, Urdu, and Punjabi in addition to English throughout his practice, which allows him to reach a diverse amount of patients. His staff members can speak Spanish fluently to provide excellent service to Spanish speaking population. He likes to educate his patients about the need for preventive healthcare.
