Dr. Beverly Joyce, MD's Expert Contributions
Spotting with pregnancy symptoms?
Test again if the period hasn't come in a few days. The other reason you can miss a period is if you didn't ovulate on time. READ MORE
Early period?
It is probably due to taking the pills continuously, but it's never a bad idea to do a pregnancy test to be certain. READ MORE
Cancer or BV?
Make sure your pap smear is up to date, and you may want to get tests for other types of infection. If you are having pain, I would suggest an ultrasound. READ MORE
Peri-implantation bleed?
Hopefully the report also states that there is a normal-sized fetus with a normal heart rate. These kinds of bleeds typically resolve with time. Best wishes, Dr. Joyce READ MORE
Pregnancy test?
It means you are definitely far enough along to get an ultrasound and see the fetus. READ MORE
Ovarian cysts & other complications?
Cysts on the ovary can come and go. When they are bigger than 5cm there is a risk or rupture or torsion (where the ovary twists on its blood supply) and these can both cause acute pain. An 11cm cyst is not likely to go away—you may need it surgically removed. If you are continuing to have severe pain, go to the Emergency Department. READ MORE
Positive pregnancy tests..but negative blood test?
There can be false positive and false negatives. If you're 6 weeks pregnant (2 weeks late) I would expect both the home test AND the blood test to be positive. I would repeat the blood testing and ask for a pelvic ultrasound. Dr. Joyce READ MORE
Am I pregnant?
Your ObGyn will evaluate why you are not getting your period . She can also give you medication to bring on the period if you are not pregnant. READ MORE
Abnormal bleeding?
I would take a look with a mirror and see if there's any tearing of the skin around the vagina. If there's a break in the skin, you will need to let it heal before you have intercourse again. At that point, make you are lubricated- either naturally or with a lubricant- before trying again. READ MORE
Heavy period after covid?
Menstrual changes are common with Covid, but you're also in an age range that there could be something else going on- fibroids, or hormonal changes. I would recommend seeing your primary care doc or gynecologist. READ MORE
Can I take norethisterone as well as the progesterone only pill?
Yes, you could take both to delay the period. READ MORE
Bleeding again?
Have you had a recent exam and Pap? Your history is concerning for something going on in the cervix. Other reasons for bleeding like this: pregnancy-related, infection-related, or hormonal. Please see your gynecologist. I would see your gynecologist. READ MORE
Pregnancy possibility?
If you have regular periods then you had unprotected sex around ovulation and could become pregnant. If you are still within 72-96 hours you can take Plan B to try to prevent pregnancy. But if your period is late, do a pregnancy test. Also you may want to consider STD testing unless you have both been tested recently. READ MORE
Is it normal to test positive for HPV after being clear for 6 years and not sexually active?
Hi, yes we see this all the time. Many women who have been clear for years turn up positive with no explanation. More than 80% of women are exposed to HPV over their lifetime, usually in their 20s. It is suppressed by the immune system but can turn up randomly assuming no new sexual partners. Repeat your pap in one year and don’t smoke. Most of the time it resolves spontaneously. READ MORE
Vaginal bleeding about 3-4 days since my last period?
I would certainly do a pregnancy test. Please talk to your doctor or nurse practitioner about using contraception. READ MORE
Possible STD?
Those are normal. But please get STD tested if you are not using a condom. READ MORE
Irregular bleeding?
There are two issues: why are you bleeding so often, and are your symptoms of fatigue related to anemia? Is there any chance you're pregnant? If not, it sounds like you are not ovulating regularly, but you need some blood tests and an ultrasound. Please see your primary care doc or your gynecologist. Best, Dr. Joyce READ MORE
Period concerns and birth control?
Did you restart the active pills on time? If so, you should be protected from a contraception standpoint. Since you haven't bled for 3 months, that may be why the bleeding is a little longer. READ MORE
Going off birth control?
At 61, you are at a much higher risk of heart attack, stroke, or DVT on the doses of estrogen in birth control pills. If you are a candidate for menopausal hormone replacement therapy, you can switch. It's best to be on an estrogen patch, rather than oral estrogen to reduce your risks. Also make sure you are up to date on your pap and mammogram. READ MORE
Sphincterplasty from obstetric injury?
I’m sorry you’re going through this. Several kinds of surgeons could do this but you want one who does female pelvic surgery, like a urogynecologist or pelvic surgery specialist. There’s a high success rate with the first repair so you want to make sure it’s done right. Also super important to keep your stools soft and not strain. Good luck. READ MORE

Get to know Gynecologist Dr. Beverly Joyce, who serves patients in Redwood City, California.
A well-regarded obstetrician-gynecologist, Dr. Joyce is a part of the team of professionals at
Women’s Care Medical Group, which is a part of Stanford Children’s Health.
She performs gynecologic surgery at Sequoia Hospital, including minimally-invasive and open hysterectomy, laparoscopy and hysteroscopy. She also does office procedures, including colposcopy, LEEP, ultrasound, saline infusion sonography, hysteroscopy, IUD insertion, endometrial biopsy, and intrauterine insemination. She has expertise in perimenopause and menopause, and management with hormonal and non-hormonal therapies.
“The opportunity to bring life into the world makes my field one of the happiest in all of medicine. But my practice has evolved into the practice of gynecology, infertility, menopause and well-woman care. Patients I have delivered are now perimenopausal and I am seeing their daughters as patients! ” expressed the doctor.
With a love for being a woman in a woman’s field, Dr. Joyce has been through many of the same things her patients have been through, so she can relate. She treats all aspects of wellness, including stress reduction, work/life balance, parenting, self-care, and anything else that may come up.
People who know her say that she is direct and she doesn’t beat around the bush. She listens very closely to what her patients are saying, and values their opinions about their own care. She thinks her ability to listen and truly hear what they are saying is what attracts people to her.
When Dr. Joyce was young, she wanted to become a veterinarian. But as it turned out, she was allergic to animal hair, hay, and grass. During high school, she shadowed an OB/GYN in her local community in Boulder, Colorado, and that clinched her destiny.
Obstetrics and gynecology (OB-GYN) is the medical specialty that encompasses the two subspecialties of obstetrics (covering pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period) and gynecology (covering the health of the female reproductive system – vagina, uterus, ovaries, and breasts). An obstetrician-gynecologist, or OB-GYN, is a healthcare professional who specializes in female reproductive health.
In 1984, Dr. Joyce graduated with her Bachelor of Arts degree from Mount Holyoke College. She spent the next year in Fairfax, Virginia working at The Genetics and IVF Institute, where she honed her skill in ultrasound. She then studied at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, graduating with her medical degree in 1989. She completed her internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in San Francisco and then spent six years as a staff physician in Kaiser’s Ob/Gyn Department before joining Women’s Care Medical Group in 1999.
Providing care to women of all ages, she is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). The ABOG is a non-profit organization that provides board certification for practicing obstetricians and gynecologists in the United States and Canada.
Trained as a life coach, Dr. Joyce coaches other physicians who may be struggling with career and life stressors. This includes burnout, desire for career pivot, relationship issues, empty nest, as well as issues particular to menopause- brain fog, weight gain, anxiety and depression.
“Through coaching, therapy and some deep soul-searching, I gave up obstetrics and the crazy hours that go with it, to work part-time doing gynecologic procedures, infertility, and well-woman care. I love coaching my patients on wellness strategies, and stress and lifestyle management, in addition to their medical conditions, especially perimenopause and menopause. Through my expertise in women’s issues and in-depth, specific training in physician coaching, I also developed my own coaching program for women physicians who may be struggling” stated Dr. Joyce.
As part of her burnout journey, she became a HeartMath Certified trainer. Through breathing practice and mindset, this particular set of techniques helps her manage stress and the negative effects of cortisol on the body. Unlike meditation, these techniques can be used in the moment when stress hits. They can give an individual a sense of “alert calm,” and open the intuitive and creative channels of the mind. With regular practice, one will be able to de-stress more quickly, sleep better, be more creative, and enjoy life with a more balanced attitude.
Dr. Joyce’s professional affiliations include the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (Fellow), the American Medical Association, the North American Menopause Society, the American Medical Women’s Association, the California Medical Association, and the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists.
Happily married with two young adult children, Dr. Joyce is also an avid golfer. She is co-chair of the Sequoia Hospital Foundation’s annual Golf Tournament, and is a several-time champion of her golf club’s women’s group.
