Get to know Neurosurgeon Dr. Erico R. Cardoso, who serves patients in Brooklyn, New York.

Dr. Cardoso is a highly trained neurosurgeon who, since 1991, has been concentrating his efforts in the practice of general neurosurgery at Axon Neurosurgical, PLLC in Brooklyn, New York. He sees his practice as part advocate for his patients’ health, and part specialist dedicated to fighting diseases and accidents that affect the nervous system and brain.

In order to ameliorate his patients’ suffering and improve their quality of life, Dr. Cardoso wholeheartedly harnesses all his skills and compassion. As a specialist, the mission of his practice is to reverse the disease process and return his patients to normal life. To this end, he brings many years of experience as a neurosurgeon and avid continuing research in the field.

As an advocate, he takes seriously how deeply patients and their families are affected when they come to see him. He commits to working tirelessly to reduce the inconvenience and interruption to their daily lives.

Practicing medicine in New York, Dr. Cardoso is affiliated with Richmond University Medical Center and NYC Health + Hospitals / Lincoln.

Prior to his current endeavours, he served as the Director of the Cerebral Hydrodynamics Laboratory at Health Sciences Clinical Research Centre (September 1987-November 1990), the Director of the Department of Neurosurgery at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center (September 1992-September 1997), the Chief of the Department of Neurosurgery at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center (September 1997-May 2000), the Chief of the Department of Neurosurgery at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center (December 1999-June 2001), the Chief of the Division of Neurosciences at New York Methodist Hospital (March 2002-November 2006), and as the Chief of the Department of Neurosurgery at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center (January 2007-September 2012).

A native of Brazil, Dr. Cardoso graduated with his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine of Universidade Federal de Goiás in 1974. He started his neurosurgical residency in Brazilia, Brazil and completed it in Canada.

Furthering his training, he was accepted to the University of Ottawa, Canada where he went through intensive training in general surgery and neurosurgery, obtaining a Master’s degree in Neuro-Anatomy. He then went on to obtain two specialty fellowships in neurosurgery; the first in vascular neurosurgery in Ontario, Canada; and the second in pituitary diseases and neuro-trauma in Glasgow, Scotland. After a few years of neurosurgical practice in Canada, Dr. Cardoso was invited to work as a guest surgeon at the University of Umea, Sweden.

In the early years of his academic career, he conducted extensive bench and clinical research in diseases related to abnormalities of the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF), such as hydrocephalus, Arnold-Chiari malformation, benign intracranial hypertension, shunting, and syringomyelia. His award-winning expertise in these areas soon garnered invitations to practice in the United States.

With an unwavering commitment to his speciality, Dr. Cardoso is board-certified through the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS). The broad aim of the ABNS is to encourage the study, improve the practice, elevate the standards, and advance the science of neurological surgery and thereby serve the cause of public health.

Furthermore, he holds board certifications through the Medical Council of Canada, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and the American Academy of Pain Management.

Throughout his line of work, Dr. Cardoso has conducted a number of peer-review articles, book chapters and reviews, and presentations. His medical inventions include: modified Mayo-Adams retractor for use in carotid endarterectomies, new anti-siphon valve for CSF shunting, time domain reflectometer for continuous measurement of cerebral edema (approved Canadian patent), rotational needle for cerebral cortical biopsy, and percutaneous technique for resection/radiotherapy of spinal tumors.

In good standing with a number of professional organizations, he is an active member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and the New York Society of Neurological Surgeons.

Neurosurgery is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system. Neurosurgeons are licensed medical specialists who diagnose and treat disorders that affect the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles of patients. They examine a patient’s mental and physical status, conduct medical tests and scans, and evaluate the results to diagnose and treat the patient.

An authority in his field, Dr. Cardoso has been repeatedly rated one of New York City’s Top Doctors by both New York Magazine and Castle Connolly, a national arbiter of America’s top physicians. But perhaps the most meaningful validation of confidence in his capabilities is the number of respected physicians throughout the metropolitan area who have repeatedly trusted the health of their own family members to his care.
