Under his guidance, the lung cancer screening program at St. Elizabeth Healthcare has achieved remarkable success rates in early detection. Dr. Gieske proudly reports, “To date, our program has found 62.5% in stage I lung cancer and 73.7% collectively in early stages I and II, which have the most favorable outcomes.” This exceptional performance is just one of the reasons why St. Elizabeth Healthcare ranks among the top 4% of healthcare systems nationwide for lung cancer screening programs, as acknowledged by the American College of Radiology.  In the last two years, early-stage lung cancers have substantially surpassed late-stage lung cancers in his institution; this is largely unprecedented.  Along with his remarkable team, they are changing the narrative on lung cancer, which historically has had such a dismal prognosis.

Dr. Gieske’s journey in medicine began with a solid academic foundation at Thomas More University, followed by the completion of his Bachelor of Arts Degree. He furthered his education by earning his Medical Degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1984, after which he completed his internship and residency in family medicine at St. Elizabeth Healthcare.

Having always had a passion for medicine, Dr. Gieske attributes his success to his unwavering dedication to his patients and quest for the most innovative approaches to improving the state of healthcare. He values the opportunity to interact with individuals, listen to their concerns, and provide them with the support and answers they need to achieve optimal health outcomes.  He is mainly administrative in his duties now, committing his time and energies to improving lung cancer and lung cancer screening awareness, and related research, advocacy, and policy work.  He is literally screaming from the mountaintops to bring hope to all with and at risk for lung cancer.
