How long after tooth removal should I get implants?
The answer to that question varies alot. I've had several implants myself. For front teeth, the implants can sometimes be placed when the tooth is removed. For back teeth, which usually have multiple roots, the Dr can fill the socket with graph material after tooth removal to keep the bone from shrinking as much. Multi-rooted teeth require longer wait time, but graphing the sockets does help with that. You have to ask your surgeon for specifics. READ MORE
What is the alternative to a dental bridge?
When you are missing one or more teeth you have 4 choices: 1. Dental Bridge (this is the best choice if the teeth adjacent to the missing one/ones are broken down and need repair anyway, and you are not one who gets a lot of cavities. (expensive) 2. This is the best choice if the adjacent teeth to the missing are in good shape and don't need to be restored (expensive) 3. If you can't afford to have a dental bridge or implant, you can get a removable partial denture, which usually has metal wires to hold it in. This is a good choice if you want the least expense and could possibly have "1 or 2" at a later stage of your life. You still have those choices even if you can't afford them at this time. 4. Do nothing. Having a missing tooth or teeth makes it harder to chew and doesn't look so good, but it isn't life-threatening, so even if you can't afford 1,2 or 3 now, you may do that later. READ MORE
Can you use mouthwash with a dental bridge?
Yes, but avoid mouthwash with alcohol. Don’t expect mouthwash to avoid halitosis (bad breath)…as it only covers up the problems for 20-30 minutes READ MORE
Should I have toothache after getting a crown?
Sometimes a newly crowned tooth is sensitive to cold and biting if the new crown is slightly “high”…meaning that the lab who made the crown as perfect as they could, made it slightly too “tall” so it hits the opposing tooth to much and gets sensitive. That’s quite easy for the dentist to fix, by polishing down the points (cusps) that the lab left too high. Quite a common occurrence. If the lab leaves it too low, it can’t be fixed without replacing the entire crown, but if it’s too high…just polish it until it’s not hitting the other teeth too much. There are other reasons for sensitivity, but too high is the most likely. READ MORE

Bitterness in mouth
Dysgeusia is a taste disorder. People with the condition feel that all foods taste sour, sweet, bitter or metallic. Dysgeusia can be caused by many different factors, including infection, some medications and vitamin deficiencies. Treatment involves addressing the underlying cause of dysgeusia. Most of the time, dysgeusia is a side effect of certain treatments or medications, or it could be due to vitamin or mineral deficiencies. In rare cases, however, dysgeusia could be a symptom of liver disease, hypothyroidism or other health conditions. It's important to mention that the most common cause by and large is loss of sense of smell. This is particularly seen with COVID-19 infections. There are other different factors that can lead to the development of dysgeusia. Your healthcare provider will examine you and ask about your symptoms. If they determine that you have dysgeusia, then the next step will be identifying the underlying cause. In many cases, treating the root cause can ease your symptoms and help your sense of taste return to normal. READ MORE

Are crowns on front teeth noticeable?
Crowns, done improperly or with the wrong materials, can be noticeable. The rules are these:1. If the crown is one of the 2 (middle) front teeth, it should be a twin to its neighbor middle tooth2. If the crown is to the left or right, (beside the 2 front ones), it can just be a sibling..as often the other front teeth do not match in _shape_ exactly3. from a conversational distance (3 feet) the color of the crown, or the opacity of the crown should not be different from the other front teeth4. If the tooth having the crown is very dark, sometimes the dentist has to use porcelain/metal crowns to block the color.5. If the tooth having the crown is not very dark, an all-ceramic crown can be done (no metal) and can be beautiful. READ MORE
How long will a temporary dental crown last?
I once had a Merchant Marine Patient who came for a crown. I placed a temporary crown and we made an appointment in 2 weeks for the final crown. His ship called him before his crown was ready and I didn’t see him for 1.5 years. He sent me a postcard from Antarctica! When he finally returned to the office, he still had his temporary crown in place, though it was worn through to the tooth. So temp crowns can last weeks or years, as it varies greatly. It is safer to replace it within a month or two if possible. READ MORE
Can you chew gum with crowns?
Yes, you can chew gum after the final crown is delivered, but not while you have a temporary crown, as it is held on by soft cement, and you might "loosen" the temporary crown. The final crown is placed with hard cement. It is also important, when chewing gum, to choose only gum with Xylitol (a natural sugar) as the primary ingredient. Do not use ones with sucrose, manitol, sorbitol, or any artificial sweetener. READ MORE
How much swelling is normal after dental implant surgery?
I have several implants myself, and had very little swelling…but lots of my patients have had a fair amount of swelling and bruising, according to how much surgery was done. Infection in tooth, swelling alot!.
Imagine a rusty nail in your foot that you left for months because it wasn't hurting much. Then imagine your foot starts swelling with gangrene infection. Then you go to the ER and they give you antibiotics for your foot. That, in effect, is what is happening to your mouth. In the case of your foot, it would NEVER heal & get better with the nail still embedded in your foot.SO, you need to take care of the infected tooth which is the cause of the swelling. If it's a pretty good tooth you need, then go to an Endodontist who will clean the infection out of the tooth and perhaps put it in a drain for the swelling. If the tooth is too badly damaged to keep, just have your dentist remove it and he will clean out the socket. The swelling in your face can close up your eye in an upper tooth and can cut off the ability to breathe in a lower tooth infection. READ MORE
What color is best for braces?
The best looking braces are “Invisalign”. When the guy who started the company met the first time with potential investors to raise money, he told them about the new company for an hour…and then took out the aligners he was wearing to show the amazed audience who never thought he was wearing anything over his teeth! Should I be concerned about root canal pain?
When I had a root canal done most of the pain went away after a couple of days. But the tooth didn’t feel quite right for over seven months. If the root canal was done in the back of the mouth, the infection that gets out into the bone is not cured by having a root canal done. The root canal filling only fixes the cause of the infection, which is the damaged tooth. The infection that gets out in the bone around the end of the root is much more difficult to fix, and your immune system is what fixes it. The immune system works like ants taking away a sand pile, very slowly, because it’s hard to get to infection that’s in the bone. Sometimes it’s many months before the pain is totally gone. Mine has been comfortable now for over 30 years! If your pain gets worse, not gradually better, you need to let your dentist know. READ MORE
