Dr. Michael B. Silva Jr., MD's Expert Contributions
  • Varicose veins wounds

Compression stockings, ambulation, elevation when practical, these are the traditional methods of slowing the progression of venous dilation leading to varicose veins. Dependent positioning of your legs, either standing or sitting for long periods lead to venous stagnation. Having your veins examined by ultrasound can give you information as to the status of your valves. READ MORE

  • What is a carotid doppler ultrasound?

Carotid Doppler Ultrasound, sometimes referred to as a Carotid Duplex examination, uses the same basic techniques that are used to look at babies in the womb, a smooth probe is used with a gel and moved over the skin on your neck to view the carotid artery below. It is designed to measure the blood flow and to look for narrowing by plaque that can be associated with strokes. At 38 years of age it would be unusual for you to have significant atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries in this location, unless you have significant risk factors - like hyperlipidemia, smoking, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia or a family history of early arterial disease. • Will compression socks help varicose veins?

They won't make them go away, but yes they will help. Wearing compression stockings can reduce the progression of the disease and may prevent worsening. There are different levels of compression. Your vascular surgeon can help you pick the right level for your vein health. READ MORE
