What is the treatment for peripheral arterial disease?
Treatment of PAD depends on symptoms, but first thing is to control risk factors- stop smoking, BP under control, start asa and statins. If the symptoms are moderate to severe then endovascular intervention is the way to go depending on the level of disease on ultrasound. READ MORE
My father has blood clots in his legs. What should be the course of treatment?
Hypertension doesn't cause clots, but can cause plaque build-up in arteries, resulting in blockage of arteries. The treatment depends on the severity of blockage and symptoms. Ramandeep Sidhu, MD, FACS, RPVI READ MORE
What is the recovery period after a vascular surgery?
So, abdominal aortic aneurysm can be repaired either endovascular or open. If it's endovascular, I'd do percutaneous and he will be walking out of the hospital next day with only the limitation of no lifting heavy weights for a few days, but can carry out most of the activities. No, if the repair is open, then he will be out for a few weeks and gradually coming back to normal over about a 3-month period. Hope this helps. Ramandeep Sidhu, MD, FACS, RPVI READ MORE
I had a 24 hour flight and my feet seem numb even 12 hours after the journey. What could be the problem?
Just sitting for a long time can do that. Try walking every few hours and if that doesn't help, you can consult a vascular specialist. Ramandeep Sidhu, MD, FACS, RPVI READ MORE
My father has been detected with peripheral artery disease. Please advise.
It's very common to see if someone has coronary artery disease, as they will have peripheral vascular disease, too. The management depends on the severity of symptoms, and if they are mild, then medical management with asa/statins and risk factor modification is enough. If the symptoms are severe then intervention could be required. Ramandeep Sidhu, MD, FACS, RPVI READ MORE

Can PAD be treated with a surgery?

Is there a possibility of a patient suffering a heart attack during a vascular surgery?
Short answer is yes but we try to take all precautions and do all the preoperative work up to make sure there are no cardiac issues during vascular procedures. In general endovascular procedures are very safe and open vascular procedures also fare well as long as the blood loss is controlled. READ MORE
What causes sudden varicose veins?
Varicose veins are more common in women , after child birth and people who spend lot of time standing. There is no specific cause of varicose veins. What is a venogram?
Venogram is a procedure where we place a small catheter in the vein, could be the groin or arm, and inject contrast to highlight the blood flow. Usually, it’s done with intravenous sedation and local anesthesia, but sometimes in kids, it can be done under general anesthesia. Thanks, Ramandeep Sidhu READ MORE
What is the treatment for varicose veins?
Treatment protocol for veins depends upon the ultrasound findings. Typically, if you have symptoms, you try compression for 3 months and then get an ultrasound to look at the valves and then proceed with treatment with RFA/LASER or Venaseal and sclerotheray for small superficial veins. Between Bypass surgery and angioplasty what is better?
It's hard to answer without knowing the other risk factors. There is no hard and fast cut off, but the surgeon should be able to tell you what's the better option considering his other comorbidities and the anatomy of the blockage. Ramandeep Sidhu, MD, FACS, RPVI READ MORE

Will vascular surgery affect my diabetes?
So, a heart valve procedure is a cardiac procedure and not vascular. The surgery itself can put stress on the body and the borderline diabetic can become a diabetic, but once you start exercising and become more active, you could go back to pre-surgery state. Surgery itself doesn't make you diabetic per se. Ramandeep Sidhu, MD, FACS, RPVI READ MORE
My mother has been diagnosed with atherosclerosis. What does treatment involve?
For atherosclerosis, the treatment depends upon the severity of symptoms. Optimizing the medical management is the first part and then, depending on the symptoms and area involved, it could be nedovascular or open procedures. Most vascular procedures these days are endovascular and the recovery time is very short and these procedures are very safe. READ MORE
