Growing up, Dr. Lane made rounds with his father, an orthopaedic surgeon in Northern Virginia. He had the privilege of watching the first total hip and knee replacement surgeries done in Northern Virginia when they were performed by his father at Inova Fairfax Hospital. By the time he was a teenager, he was well aware of his own interest in orthopaedic surgery. After working at the Veterans Hospital in high school and in the emergency room during his college days at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, he went on to earn his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. He then completed his internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery at Georgetown University Medical Center.
Having been involved in the advent of arthroscopic surgery during his residency, Dr. Lane helped to develop some of the early arthroscopic equipment and continues to dedicate a large part of his practice to sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery still today. He is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopaedic residents and surgeons, as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopaedic surgeons.
In participation with cutting-edge orthopaedic research, some of the doctor’s activities include membership on the trauma team at Fairfax Hospital, service as an investigational physician in the early trials of bone morphogenetic protein, work as a terminal ballistic expert consulting with the FBI and Special Forces, as well as membership on the Board of Directors for Missing and Exploited Children. Additionally, Dr. Lane is a 1998 inductee in the Virginia Football Hall of Fame and recipient of the Karl Davey Award for his work with regional high school athletes.
He remains a member of the Fairfax County Medical Society, the Virginia Medical Society, the American Medical Association, the Washington Orthopaedic Club, and the Undersea Medical Society. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Orthopaedic surgery or orthopaedics is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.
In his leisure time, Dr. Lane is an avid underwater diver and photographer. He works with National Geographic Magazine, the Humpback Whale Research Team based in Maui, Hawaii, as well as Bob and Ed’s Scuba Experience in Tampa, Florida. His greatest loves are his family and close behind, his long-term patients.
