Get to know Pediatrician Dr. Michelle Potchen Sanford, who serves patients in San Diego, California.

Dr. Sanford is a board-certified pediatrician who is currently serving patients at Scripps Clinic Carmel Valley in San Diego, California. Scripps Clinic Carmel Valley provides a “one-stop” health care experience for children and adults.

She is also affiliated with Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla – a hospital that has served the greater San Diego community since 1924. Nearly 100 years later, Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla continues to provide some of the region’s most distinguished care, including several nationally ranked specialty programs.

As for the Dr. Sanford’s educational background, she earned her medical degree from the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in East Lansing, Michigan in 1983. She then went on to complete her residency in pediatrics at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1985, followed by her residency in pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego in 1986. 

Throughout her career, Dr. Sanford has received numerous awards, including Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2014, 2015), On-Time Doctor Award (2015), and Patients’ Choice Award (2015). She also holds board certification in pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The ABP is an independent, nonprofit organization that was founded in 1933 and one of the 24 certifying boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties. 

Pediatrics is the branch of medicine that involves the medical care of infants, children, and adolescents. As a pediatrician, Dr. Sanford examines, diagnoses, and treats children of all ages with a wide variety of injuries and illnesses. She understands that children change rapidly and that they must be approached with an appreciation for their stage of physical and mental development.
