What happens when you get adjusted by a chiropractor?
Adjustments remove interferences in the body. This allows the nervous system to function properly, so the rest of the organs function optimally. There is more movement in the joints (increase in range of motion), relaxation, and ultimately decrease in pain following the adjustment. Oftentimes, there is a "crack" sound that may be heard during the adjustment -- do not be alarmed, as this is gas being released in the joints of the spine. Overall, chiropractic is a very effective and safe treatment for EVERYONE: it helps people of all ages, professional and non-professional athletes, those who are in pain, as well as those who wish to maintain their healthy lifestyle. How do I crack my own lower back?
People shoulder never "crack their own back." Please understand that chiropractors have extensive training in adjusting--over 3 years. And, there are over 300 types of adjustments. Finally, chiropractors know the exact part of the body to contact to perform the adjustment, what technique to use (and not use)--as incorrect set ups and techniques can cause more harm than good. I do NOT recommend "self cracking." Regards, Angie Skokos, DC, MS READ MORE
How often should I see a chiropractor for hip pain?
Hi! Treatment depends on the cause of hip pain, the length of time the patient has been suffering, the diagnosis, any trauma or injuries, and any comorbidity factors (such as if the patient has diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, overweight, etc). Is a chiropractor a real doctor?
Hello and thank you for inquiring about chiropractic. The answer to your question: Yes! Chiropractors are REAL doctors! As a chiropractor we approach patients differently than medical doctors. We look to get to the source of the problem and correcting it, rather than prescribing medication which often times covers up the problem. As a chiropractor, I have had over 5 years of chiropractic school after my four years of undergraduate studies. I continued my studies to earn my masters of science degree, and I have additional training in acupuncture. In the state of Illinois we are primary care physicians which means we can take blood and evaluate the results, and of course treat any abnormalities (ie elevated cholesterol, thyroid dysfunction, elevated high blood pressure, etc). In addition some chiropractors have gone onto additional schooling (such as myself) where we have learned about acupuncture and other means of helping patients with pain—naturally. I hope this answers your question. READ MORE

What happens if sciatica is left untreated?
Happy New Year! Like any health condition, Leaving sciatica unattended can result in prolonged adverse affects on the body. It is always best to determine the cause of the sciatic, ie, degenerative disk disease, lumbar disc syndrome, piriformis syndrome, etc. and to treat it accordingly. Pain, possible degenerative changes, muscle imbalance, low back pain, and the entire kinetic chain resulting in imbalance and discomfort. This is because the biomechanics of the spine and joints are being affected and compromised. And, if the cause is not addressed early on and properly, the cause itself may worsen, which in turn can worsen the corresponding symptoms as well as create new problems. It is always best for patients to be evaluated and treated as early as possible is that future problems don’t begin and persist. Hope this helps.... What are the risks of chiropractic neck adjustments?
Hello and thank you for reaching out! Risks can be associated with a patient’s health history. Some patients may experience soreness in the neck area, headaches, while others can sleep much better after their adjustment. In actuality, this is part of the healing process. Others don’t experience any side effects at all. Yet others can experience more range of motion, or more movement in the area that has been affected. Decrease in pain is another positive side effect of the adjustment. Soreness may result because there is movement that has resulted in the restricted areas of the spine. It could be compared to wearing braces: initially there could be some soreness when the braces are applied on the teeth. After a few days the soreness will go away. Fractured bone is another possibility—again depending if there oseteopenia or weakened bones. Finally there is also a very, very small risk of stroke, but a normal healthy person has much more chance of getting hit by lightning on a sunny day than you do to get after adjustment. Again it’s the doctors responsibility to obtain a thorough health history and examination of the patient who will be receiving the adjustment. Things like elevated cholesterol that is uncontrolled, history of stroke or history of TIA, and history of heart attack may be factors that may be related to having a stroke after the adjustment. Since I have not seen your 12-year-old daughter, it makes it difficult to comment on potential side effects. If she is a healthy 12-year-old with no other health issues, I would expect the only type of side effects may be soreness and possible headache. Again, It’s important to discuss these details with the treating physician. Personally, I have successfully treated patients two days old all the way up to 103 years old. In fact I safely treat my own kids who are 14 years old is 17 years old (they are avid athletes) through chiropractic adjustments. Overall, and in General, chiropractic is a very, very safe way to treat various injuries and also to help maintain a healthy lifestyle. It is implemented utilizing various techniques in pregnant women, infants, toddlers, teenagers and all the way up to the older individuals. Angie Skokos, DC, MS READ MORE
